Your Bridge to
Atenas
In January my wife and I
trekked over to Sarchi, about 35 minutes away, to visit the Else
Kientzler Botanical Garden, which we had heard of favorably. We
came away so impressed we returned soon with friends.
This park is situated on 7
hectares of land, and is actually an extension of
Innovaplant de Costa Rica S.A., an exporter of ornamental plants
to the world, and experimenter in the field of in vitro
cultivation.
At the time of our visit, they
claimed a selection of about 2,000 plant species, with origins
from Guyana, New Zealand, Madagascar, Japan, Bahamas, Java,
Brazil, India, Korea, and Costa Rica.

The first impression upon
entering the gardens is lush, the infrastructure is professional,
with ample paved parking in the shade, a large administration
building, and an attractive reception with souvenir shop, plus
friendly staff.
The garden paths are crushed
rock, and you will be given a brochure and map upon entering
showing how to negotiate the entire park in a circle walk, ending
at the succulent garden which feeds back into the main building.
The setting is very peaceful, and the plantings are not only
tastefully landscaped, but plaques are provided, identifying
species. There is a picnic area and playground. The small
lake/pond is enchanting.
The whole layout indicates a
serious intent by serious people to provide a high-quality
experience, and residents paid only 1800 colones at that time.
Highly recommended!
Here's a

the reception area
And here's a handheld
movie of the
cataract falling into the pond.
