Land measures old and new

In the early years of the country, Spanish measure were used for land. The basic unit of measure was the vara, which is variable among the Spanish provinces but has been established as 31 inches here. Supposedly 10,000 square varas equaled a manzana of land, and was the theoretical base for the measurement of a city block, 100 X 100 varas.

(The vara is still in use here in measure of lumber, the most common length being 4 varas, or roughly 10 ft or 3 meters.)

The basic unit for legal measurement now is the system of meters and hectares. A hectare is 10,000 m2 (square meters). A manzana is roughly 7000m2, and an acre is roughly 4000 m2. It's an elegant system, because in a instant a lot of 1000 m2 offered you can identify immediately as 1/4 acre, or 1/10th of a hectare.

A hectare is the equivalent of 2.47 acres.
